Recognizing the role of physical activity in the prevention of diabetes and as a tool to help you maintain normal blood glucose levels, the Diabetes Wellness Center has trained five Registered Nurses as Physical Fitness Specialists. As educators, they can answer most questions you may have regarding the role of physical activity in the management of your diabetes.
The Diabetes Wellness Center is scheduled to open in Talihina in September of 2003. A physical fitness center will be located in the 12,000 sq. ft. facility to provide you opportunities for physical activity using state of the art equipment. A physical fitness manager will be hired to ensure you know how to properly use the equipment and prevent injury. Group classes will also be offered in the wellness center. More information will be posted on this website when the facility is ready to open.

A Few Things About Physical Activity

Here are some tips to help increase your daily dose of physical activity.

  • Start with a little. Walking, working in the yard, and dancing are good ways to start. As you become stronger, you can add more minutes to your daily physical activity.
  • Incorporate physical activity into your everyday lifestyle. It is better for you to walk 10 or 20 minutes each day than to walk one hour once a week.
  • Choose an activity you enjoy. Do an activity you really like. If you enjoy doing it, you are more apt to do it each day. It is also a great idea to exercise with a friend.

The Benefits of Physical Activity

It is very important to have an active lifestyle. Physical activity has several benefits

  • Physical activity can help you control your blood glucose and your weight.

  • Physical activity can lessen the chances of colds and the flu.
  • Physical activity not only gives you energy, but also gives you a brighter mental outlook.
  • Physical Activity helps you to stay healthy and gives you strong bones, joints, and muscles.
  • Physical activity enables you to live a health ier, longer, happier life.

Getting Started!

When one is thinking adding more exercise into their life, it might be helpful to think about successful habit changes that have happened in the past. Like all of us, you have probably made several changes in the way in which you live. Maybe you have started a new hobby, or have cut back on the fat in your diet. Even small changes such as these are important. These small changes are proof that you can change your habits for the better.
There's no question, taking that first step for your own personal exercise program can be hard. Maybe you've never exercised. Maybe you used to, but stopped. Maybe you have been recently diagnosed with diabetes, and you feel like you will never be fit again. Don't despair. Learn how to weave an exercise program into your lifestyle.
