What foods are healthy?

No single food will supply all the nutrients your body needs, so good nutrition means eating a variety of foods.

A Few Things About Food

  • Eat regular meals. Ask you health care team to help you choose a meal plan that is right for you
  • Eat a variety of foods. Choose a variety of foods to eat so that your body will get the nutrition that it needs.
  • Eat less fat. Foods that are baked, broiled, grilled, boiled, or steamed are healthier to eat than fried foods.
  • Eat less sugar. Eat more high-fiber foods, such as dried beans, fruit, and vegetables.
  • Eat less salt. Eating less salt may help to control your blood pressure. Use less salt when you prepare foods and cut down on processed foods, such as foods in cans and jars.

Setting up a plan for eating healthy

You and your dietitian should work together to design a meal plan that's right for you and includes foods that you enjoy. A diabetes meal plan is a guide that tells you how much and what kinds of food you can choose to eat at meals and snack times.
A good meal plan should fit in with your schedule and eating habits. The right meal plan will also help keep your weight where it should be. Whether you need to lose weight, gain weight, or stay where you are, your meal plan can help.
The Diabetes Wellness Center has a Registered Dietitian as a member of the multi-disciplinary team. Every diabetic patient should have an initial consultation with the dietitian to develop your personal meal plan. The recommendation is that you have a follow-up visit each year to make sure you are on track with your meal plan.
