REACH 2010
(Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health)
REACH 2010 currently
serves all 10 ½ counties that cover the Choctaw Nation.
REACH 2010 purpose is to
provide physical activity health promotion interventions for tribal member
Native Americans, and Non-Native American family members in the service area,
to increase knowledge and awareness about the incidence and prevalence of risk
factors of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease and to increase the knowledge
and awareness that prevention of Diabetes and CVD can be attained through
physical activity.
REACH participants are measured
upon joining the program and re-measured every 6 months for height, weight,
BMI, body fat percent by skin fold callipering or hip/waist measurements.
During re-measurements results are explained and participants are counseled on
physical activity, diet, and various literatures are disseminated.
REACH provides monthly
access to physical activity by conducting various activities such as family
night basketball, tennis, volleyball, dodge ball, etc.
During the school term
REACH 2010 conducts a physical fitness/wellness program with 3 rural third
grade schools.
Staff consists of Teresa
Frederick R.N., REACH Program Coordinator, and Doris Ward, REACH Program Assistant.
Both staff members currently hold Physical Fitness Specialist Certification and
Special Populations Certification from The Cooper Aerobics Institute and
Advanced Facilitator Training for Experiential Learning.
Teresa is also certified in
The Biomechanics of Resistance Training from The Cooper Aerobics Inst. Doris also holds certification from The Cooper Aerobics Inst. in Group Exercise Leadership
and Coaching Healthy Behaviors.
